Exhibition Centre WeeGee’s café-restaurant has been renovated during the summer. Lumière WeeGee’s new look was created by Aivan design and innovation agency. Chief designer Aleksi Kuokka says that he wanted to create an exceptionally bold visual look that stands the test of time and a space for enjoyment and meeting people. Lumière WeeGee is a place where you can have morning coffee or lunch, enjoy refreshments in the afternoon, have brunch or a sparkling drink at an opening. It is also suitable for working and informal meetings, for example.
Lumière WeeGee’s design was inspired by the architecture of the former Weilin&Göös printing house, designed by Aarno Ruusuvuori in the 1960s, as well as the story of the company’s founders, Mr Weilin and Mr Göös. The designers had the vision of creating a carefully considered, high-quality interior that would be a total work of art in itself. “We chose various shades of grey as the main colours, a natural continuation of the building’s most characteristic feature,” says Aleksi Kuokka. The space consists of rough concrete surfaces, nuanced Terrazzo stone, matte ceramics as well as mirror-surfaced, brushed and painted metal. The shades of grey are complemented by warm wooden surfaces, cork, leather seats and high-quality lighting. White and black are used as accent colours.
“In keeping with the ideals of modernism, we wanted to strip away everything unessential and simplify the form to serve the materials and functions of the space. You can be endlessly inspired by the basic forms, such as the circle, square and triangle,” Aleksi enthuses. “I don’t think a space needs decorations or anything extraneous in order to be inviting and have a pleasant atmosphere. One of the cornerstones of the design work was finding a human-friendly scale and creating spaces that support various applications within a larger space, and metal partitions, concrete benches as well as selected furniture and lighting fixtures have played a central role in this”, Aleksi Kuokka says. The heavy concrete benches in the room were specially produced for Lumière WeeGee. The furniture and lighting fixtures were designed by the world’s most esteemed pioneers of modernism and designers cherishing their heritage: Seats by Ilmari Tapiovaara, Naoto Fukasawa and Jasper Morrison, lighting fixtures by Tapio Wirkkala, Le Corbusier and Cecilie Manz, tables by Konstantin Grcic. The eye-catcher in the space is the Rombini Triangle porcelain tile designed for the Italian Mutina by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, which covers the entire back wall.
The renovation increased Lumière WeeGee’s total number of seats to one hundred. The revamped space provides a versatile setting for WeeGee’s museum visitors, conference guests and event audiences. We also invite everyone from the Helsinki Metropolitan Area to adopt the café as their new living room.
