After shoplifting from a store, Osamu (Lily Franky) and his son run into a little homeless girl shivering with cold. They decide to take care of her and make her part of the family. Despite eking a living from shoplifting, the family members feel a deep affection for each other and all is well for them. The family are happy until an unforeseen incident unveils a secret that puts their bond to the test.

Hirokazu Kore-eda is one of Japan’s most highly appreciated directors today. His films previously seen in Finland include Like Father, Like Son and Our Little Sister. Shoplifters received the coveted award for best film, the Palme d'Or, at the Cannes Film Festival in spring 2018 and was also Japan’s official nominee for the Academy Award.
